Written by These lovely doodlewashes come to us from Joseph Chu in Toronto, Canada (follow him on Facebook!). He’s a Chinese Canadian, originally from Taiwan who is currently retired and living in Ontario.
Joseph’s vision for his art: “Visual expression, visual effect is everything to me as far as my canvas is concerned. I want my artwork to be visually stunning. In order to do so, the utmost creativity is involved. Give everything I’ve got so far and discover, advance to new territories in doing so.”
Before retirement he worked for the City of Toronto for 25 years, and now he very much wants to become a professional artist. Presently, he’s going to night art classes and training himself to become one. For his art medium, he likes to use all the traditional ones; charcoal, graphite, pastel, colored pencil, pen and ink, acrylic, oil, and watercolor.
“Personally, I think Pastel is the easiest to handle,” he says. “Colored pencil takes a long time to finish a painting. Pen and ink is the most delicate, but Watercolor is the most romantic one!”
He says he is still developing his own painting process by incorporating computer graphic aid, namely Photoshop, to form a contour design of the canvas first, for more complicated paintings. He loves to paint landscapes, flowers, and portraits, and wants to later work on still life and animals in watercolor. The next watercolor project he is working on is a seascape.
